see for yourself
art is personal
and what qualifies or disqualifies something as art is all up to you
nobody, and I mean nobody, has any business telling you what you should or shouldn’t like
sure, there are people in the business / art world / who get paid to tell you what’s good and what isn’t
but if I were you, I wouldn’t listen to them
I’d say: see for yourself...!
art is all work
liking or not liking something is a great starting point
but that’s all it is
otherwise we’re just talking about decoration
any so-called work of art begs for your attention
and this is where you get to decide if the work qualifies as art
not through liking or dis-liking, but through the time-consuming work of paying attention and just kinda chewing on it
is it tasty?
art appreciation just means taking the thing in
paying attention to it
chewing on it
looking at it, thinking about it, feeling into it, and letting your intuition lead you around all of that thinking and seeing and feeling
you don’t need good taste to do this
sure, you need some time and patience
but literally, this IS good taste
resonance
liking a piece isn’t the same as resonating with it
(or really, having it resonate with you)
resonance is something of a full-body / full-mind experience
it’s what a serious tasting lets you in for
real art is just an invitation to that experience
a piece will either resonate — or it won’t
but sometimes that piece simply can’t deliver
(because no matter what — it’s just not art)
but you can’t know that unless you give it a really good tasting
nobody can do it for you
which makes looking at art more like eating
or at least, munching
